The first of many American Water Works Association (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) Conventions occurred for me over 30 years ago in San Francisco.
Although I worked for a small, very regional, paint manufacturing company, Pennsbury Coatings, it was decided that I should participate in that meeting. This decision was made because our largest customer, The Philadelphia Suburban Water Company, was sending a large group of conventioneers, and I was tasked to make sure they remembered our special relationship.
This is one of the great reasons why attending this meeting is so important, and I’m looking forward to this year’s convention in Denver, Colorado June 9-13, 2013. It gives vendors a chance to demonstrate to their best customers that they are, in fact, very special. It gives us a chance to treat them in a way not always possible locally.
There are other reasons as well:
- Walking the exhibit floor and seeing what your competition is offering.
- Renewing and maintaining acquaintances developed over the years.
- Participating in committees that enhance the industry.
- Exhibiting your products to potential customers that might be unfamiliar with your company.
On a personal level, I had another reason for wanting to attend in years past. The convention was traditionally held over the Father’s Day Weekend. I worked for my Dad, and it allowed us to celebrate Father’s Day together.
Most importantly¸ participating in ACE enables you to keep your fingers on the pulse of one of the most critical industries that exists in this country. I have been to more than 30 ACE Conventions, and I hope to continue participating in them for a few more years, at least.
