NSF 600 Implementation Deadline Extended: Now What?

The potable water tank industry went into a frenzied panic in 2021 when it was announced that the NSF standard for coatings for potable water was being changed to be significantly more restrictive on the levels of certain chemicals (NSF/ANSI/CAN61-2019.)
Over the course of the year, we’ve informed our customers of the truth about the new standards, how they impact job sites, and ultimately, how the change is “old news” to Induron.
While many suppliers scrambled for solutions, Induron looked at the new standards, nodded, and pressed on with “business as usual.” Why? Because years before other companies were forced to reduce the levels of certain chemicals in their products for potable water, Induron had made the proactive decision to design and develop environmentally-friendly products that are as safe as possible for drinking water. Not because we were forced to do so by outside agencies, but because it was simply the right thing to do.
Now the agencies in charge of certifying products for potable water use, such as UL, are saying that many in our industry are complaining that they simply haven’t had time in the last couple of years to make the changes in their products required to meet the implementation date of January 26, 2023. They’ve petitioned the agencies to push the implementation date to the middle of the year–July 31, 2023. This change clearly has some people still struggling to meet these new standards. But again, Induron calmly carries on.
Induron’s Competitive Advantage: Market Focus and Proactivity
Change is inevitable, including (perhaps especially) changes in environmental regulations. But the inevitability of such changes allows a company with a clear vision to deal with such changes by being proactive rather than being forced into ruched, knee-jerk reactions. For Induron, the water tank market is a significant, targeted market and not a “side business.” Our specialized focus allows us to develop and plan proactively. Thus, while others spend their resources scrambling to meet new regulations, Induron can keep our resources focused on serving our customers and developing next generation technologies.

Way back in November of 2017, I had the good fortune to participate in the very first Contractor Connect event hosted by PaintSquare/JPCL. The inaugural event was held at the Grand Hotel on the Mobile Bay right here in my home state of Alabama. Although the group was pretty small, I believe everyone in attendance saw the value and potential of an intimate, hosted event with representatives from leading coatings contracting firms, equipment manufacturers, abrasives companies and (of course) coatings manufacturers like myself. Industry Involvement: A Gift that Keeps on Giving

As I reflect on my involvement in the water and wastewater industry over the past several decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of deep appreciation for all the great people within this industry whom I have had the pleasure of working with. In my career I’ve worked for pipe manufacturers, a coating applicator, and a paint manufacturer. In each of these different sectors of the industry I’ve met some tremendous people who have become so much more than just work colleagues. I’ve also found that these great people are not just those that I work with closely, but also those that work in adjacent sectors of the market, and even direct competitors whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with on Industry Standards. Two Tanks, One Successful Coatings System

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? That was the City of Lancaster, PA’s philosophy when selecting a coating system for their new hydropillar tank.
The coating system applied to its 7.5 million gallon ornamental ground storage tank back in 2020 was so successful that the city and their consulting engineer, AEERO Engineering, specified the same coating system for their new 2.5 million gallon fluted column “Hydropillar” that was completed this year (2021). Meet the Newest Member of the Induron Team: Steve Freed
We are thrilled to welcome Steve Freed to the Induron team as our Northeast Regional Sales Manager. While we are sad to see our longstanding Water Tank Manager and industry veteran, Tex Enoch, move toward retirement, we could not be more fortunate to have Steve Freed stepping into his role and territory. For the last few months, Steve has worked alongside Tex to establish a seamless transition.
“Steve was already well-known within the ductile iron portion of Induron’s business,” Tex said. “Before he was hired, he went with me to visit some contractors in the Lancaster, PA area as well as a job site where a 3-million gallon composite tank was being built and painted by Chicago Bridge and Iron Company–two perfect examples of what I have been doing for Induron for the last 13 years. Steve easily translated his knowledge of below-ground coatings to above-ground work in which I specialized. His technical expertise is outstanding, and his basic coating knowledge has only to be refined. I can’t imagine Induron finding a more qualified and capable replacement for me as I walk off into the sunset.”
