How Induron is like the National Champions in College Basketball

By: Tex Enoch, Induron Sales Representative

Recently, the Villanova Wildcats defeated the University of North Carolina Tarheels to win the NCAA National Championship as an undersized, scrappy, disciplined and determined unit.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I played my share of basketball.  I also grew up watching the Big Five play and loved every minute of it.  LaSalle, St. Joe’s, Temple, Penn and Villanova all had their shot playing the big guys from across the country.  These games were especially fun to watch. Though I opted to go to college in D.C., I continued to keep track of the national successes of these teams.  Continue reading How Induron is like the National Champions in College Basketball

The Good Old Days, Part Two

By George Shannon, Induron Sales Representative

I have three sons chasing their dreams in three distinctly different careers. When they were younger, we discussed how they should never give up, never quit and always be ready to adapt to any changes that came their way.

Life is a series of stages.  You start each stage as a beginner and end each as an achiever. For example, as a freshman in high school, you’re a beginner, but as a senior you’re an achiever. The same sequence occurs in the business world. Nobody starts their career as a CEO. Your career develops through a series of learning experiences.  Continue reading The Good Old Days, Part Two

The Good Old Days, Part One

By: Tex Enoch, Induron Sales Representative

Tex EnochLiving in this increasingly litigious world, we sometimes forget (or are too young to remember) what it was like in the days when everything didn’t have to be notarized or written in triplicate.

Early in my career, which currently spans about 45 years, I was required to visit a job site and certify that the blasted areas of the exterior surface of a water tank were cleared to be primed and that the previously-primed areas had the required film thickness stated in the specifications.  Continue reading The Good Old Days, Part One

The Real Santa Claus

Daddy as Santa 6 by 4 (3)By David Hood, Induron CEO

In December of 1947, my dad, William E. Hood, decided to put Christmas lights on his house to celebrate Christmas. It might not sound like a big deal, but we were just coming out of wartime when doing something like putting up lights would have been inconceivable.

He was on the roof of our 3-2 frame house on a 50 foot lot wearing a red jumpsuit when someone drove by and exclaimed, “That looks like Santa Claus!!!” Continue reading The Real Santa Claus

Cutting Through the Clutter to Build Trust

social clutterBy Davies Hood, Induron President

As a family business that’s been around for more than 65 years, Induron has learned a thing or two about  building a good reputation and establishing trust. We hope that we’ve done a good job at both. We certainly have learned valuable lessons through both successes and failures. Be wary of any business or person that has been around for 65+ years that claims otherwise. Because of an effort to learn from our mistakes, integrity and good fortune, we are still around. But we feel that can do even better going forward. Continue reading Cutting Through the Clutter to Build Trust

Solving Challenges One Project at a Time

pickering plantBy Tex Enoch, Induron Sales Rep

Some projects move right along and stay on course from the beginning with little or no challenge. This is a good thing, but what’s the fun in that? One project we did a few years ago proved to be an opportunity for forward thinking and innovation in the midst of complexities.

When I.K. Stoltzfus was hired to repaint a wash water tank and a two million-gallon clearwell for Aqua Pennsylvania at their Pickering treatment facility, they contacted Induron for the tools for the job. The Pickering Water Treatment Plant services approximately 1 million customers in Southeast Pennsylvania and produces more than 55 million gallons of treated water daily. It is a critical component to the area served by Aqua PA. For this reason, the project was scheduled to be done between October 1 and June 15 when demand for water would be at its lowest. Why We Still Do Things the Old Fashioned Way (with a little help from technology)

David HoodBy David Hood, Induron CEO

I have said before that Induron has old buildings. We do. And in thinking about the history of this company, I’m reminded of something else we have that’s old – our “batch books,” which is a log of production batches.

We actually still have our very first batch book. The original batch (batch No. 1) of paint we made was for 10 gallons of TT-P-86 Red and was recorded in pencil by my dad, Induron founder William E. Hood. We still keep batch books today, but now they are in electronic form. Continue reading Why We Still Do Things the Old Fashioned Way (with a little help from technology)

Stark Bro’s Nursery Bears Good Fruit and Great Paint

Stark Bros (2)By Linc York, Induron Sales Rep

Next year, Stark Bro’s Nursery & Orchards will celebrate their 200th year in business. To offer some perspective, they began business a decade before Thomas Jefferson died!

I was contacted by Charles Tamborski, the owner of Lanco Contracting, who was in discussion with Stark Bro’s to repair and paint their plant storage warehouse. The warehouse’s environment is continuously wet and had been the ideal spot for corrosion. The corrosion was severe enough that they had to replace about 100 of the steel purlins. Why We Love the ACE AWWA Convention

By Tex Enoch, Induron Sales Rep

The first of many annual ACE American Water Works Association (AWWA) Conventions occurred for me over 30 years ago. It was held in San Francisco.  Although I worked at the time for a small, very regional, paint manufacturing company, Pennsbury Coatings, it was decided that I should participate in that meeting.

This decision was made because our largest customer, The Philadelphia Suburban Water Company, was sending a large group of conventioneers, and I was tasked to make sure they remembered our special relationship. Continue reading Why We Love the ACE AWWA Convention
