Not only do our products beautify and protect assets from corrosion, but our paints and coatings can also be used to create murals that convey meaningful messages and unify communities.
Last month, according to Durability + Design, Public Art Chattanooga commissioned a $200,000 mural commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. The 40,000-square-foot mural covers four sides of the building on M.L. King Boulevard, which was once the city’s center of black culture and business.
We have a similar mural here in Birmingham, Alabama featuring a painting of four children of different races standing together next to the Birmingham Pledge. Induron paint, specifically AC 403 Acrylic Elastomeric, was used to paint this mural on the side of the Birmingham Police Administrative Building. It took three months to complete the mural, and it was dedicated on Sept. 10, 2000.
While Chattanooga’s mural honors Martin Luther King Jr., the Birmingham Pledge mural commemorates MLK’s message. Simply stated, the purpose of the Birmingham Pledge is to treat ALL PEOPLE with respect. It’s the Golden Rule in my book. I often say, “Life is short. Be nice.”
I’m proud that Induron was able to be a part of this particular project. Birmingham has been our home for 69 years. Over the course of those years, our city became known as the setting for some of the darkest occurrences in the Civil Rights movement. Like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from the Birmingham City Jail,” hopefully this pledge will help our hometown become associated with some of the brighter parts of this ongoing struggle.
