Recently, Induron had the privilege of partnering with Huntsville Utilities, Dixon Engineering, and G&L Sandblasting and Painting to renovate Huntsville Utilities 5-million-gallon ground storage tank in Huntsville, Alabama.
The project
Huntsville Utilities hired Dixon Engineering to handle all aspects of engineering and inspection for this project. This 5-million-gallon ground storage tank required a full interior and exterior renovation package, and Dixon Engineering turned to Induron Protective Coatings for a protective coatings solution.
The coatings solution
We specified a coating system that will provide long-term protection for the 5-million-gallon ground storage tank.
Interior system:
- Full SSPC SP-10 Blast
- Primer: PE-70 Epoxy
- Finish: Perma Clean-100
Exterior system:
- SSPC-SP-10 blast
- Primer: PE-70 Epoxy
- Intermediate Coat: Indurathane 6600 Polyurethane
- Finish: Perma-Gloss Fluoroethane
The challenges
With a project this large, proper surface preparation of such a cavernous tank is paramount. Plus, completing this during Alabama’s winter period added even more ambient challenges.
Dixon and G&L used a dry heat and dry air system to help control the interior environment as best as possible so we could apply the recommended coating solution to the interior of the tank. Our PE-70 fast cure allowed the project to keep moving during the extremely cold weather conditions.
This tank was renovated using a full exterior containment system. Unfortunately, the containment system was torn away during one of the tornado outbreaks over North Alabama. However, G&L found ways to continue working after repairing their containment system going above and beyond to ensure the project was protected and completed on time.
This full interior and exterior coating system will provide 20 years of protection on this vital piece of infrastructure for Huntsville Utilities.
